Trans-Saharan Exchange Networks: 1200-1450 CE deals with trade in Unit 2 "Networks of Exchange". It highlights the role of the Arabian camel and Islam in facilitating trade across the Saharan Desert. Focus on the Ghana, Mali and Songhai Empires and their gold and ivory trade. Predecessor to Saharan trade shown in Roman times along the Mediterranean Sea. Key factors that grew Trans-Saharan Exchange included: the Arabian Camel, Islam's spread, camel saddle, demand for gold and salt, and the rise of the Ghana, Mali and Songhai Empires.
