After the Revolution, leaders from across the colonies convened to design a new government, influenced by the trending Enlightenment ideas of the time. It was a contentious process to balance the competing needs of the diverse states, especially large vs. small and slave vs. free states. Eventually, a Constitution was signed that would guide the new republic and be amended over the years to adapt to the changing needs of the public.
