9.2 Creating and Manipulating Vector Shapes

2 min readjuly 25, 2024

Vector graphics offer endless possibilities for creating and manipulating shapes. From basic geometric forms to complex custom designs, these digital tools allow precise control over every aspect of your artwork. Mastering shape creation and manipulation is essential for crafting logos, icons, and illustrations.

Understanding and attributes, along with shape transformation techniques, empowers designers to bring their visions to life. Combining and dividing shapes opens up new creative avenues, enabling the creation of intricate designs from simple components. These skills form the foundation of vector-based graphic design.

Vector Shape Creation and Manipulation

Basic geometric shapes

  • creates squares and rectangles with adjustable corner radius for rounded corners (rounded rectangle)
  • draws circles and ovals by clicking and dragging
  • generates multi-sided shapes with adjustable number of sides and star points (hexagon, octagon)
  • produces straight lines and arrows with customizable arrowheads
  • accesses pre-built shapes and allows creation and saving of user-defined shapes (speech bubbles, hearts)

Fill and stroke attributes

  • Fill attributes include solid colors, gradients, and patterns applied to shape interiors
  • Stroke attributes encompass color, weight, alignment (inside, center, outside), and cap and corner styles
  • enables application of multiple fills and strokes with adjustable stacking order

Shape transformation and manipulation

  • (V) moves, scales, and rotates entire objects using bounding box for transformations
  • (A) modifies individual and path segments adjusting curves and angles
  • offers precise numeric transformations to scale, rotate, reflect, and shear objects
  • combines multiple transformations in one action (scale and rotate simultaneously)

Combining and dividing shapes

  • merges overlapping shapes, erases portions, and creates new shapes from intersections
  • unites, subtracts, intersects shapes, and excludes overlapping areas
  • form complex objects from simple components while maintaining individual editability
  • preserve editability of shape properties allowing parameter adjustments after creation
