13.2 The concept of the One and emanation

4 min readjuly 22, 2024

's concept of the One is a mind-bending idea about the source of everything. It's like imagining a supreme power that's so perfect and unified, it's beyond our understanding. This One isn't a god, but more like the foundation of all existence.

From this One, everything else flows out in a process called emanation. It's like a cosmic waterfall, with reality becoming less perfect as it gets further from the source. This creates a hierarchy of existence, with the physical world at the bottom.

The Neoplatonic Concept of the One

  • The One is the supreme principle and source of all existence in Neoplatonic philosophy
    • Represents the ultimate , transcending all and division
    • Exists beyond being, thought, and description, as it is the source of these concepts
  • Acts as the cause of all reality, but is not a part of that reality
    • Serves as the necessary condition for the existence of all things
    • Not a creator god, but rather the metaphysical ground of being (foundation of existence)
  • Characterized by absolute simplicity, indivisibility, and self-sufficiency
    • Does not depend on anything else for its existence
    • Embodies the highest good and the ultimate object of desire for all beings (perfect and complete)

Process of emanation in Neoplatonism

  • Emanation is the process by which all reality proceeds from the One
    • Occurs as a necessary and eternal process, not a temporal one (outside of time)
    • Results from the One's superabundance and perfection, which "overflows" to produce lower levels of reality (similar to light emanating from the sun)
  • Gives rise to a hierarchical structure of reality
    • Each level of reality serves as an image or reflection of the level above it
    • Levels become progressively less perfect and less unified as they move away from the One (like concentric circles moving outward)
  • Main levels of reality in Neoplatonism:
    1. The One: supreme principle and source of all existence
    2. : realm of pure thought and the highest level of being
    3. : intermediary between Intellect and the physical world
    4. The physical world: lowest level of reality, characterized by multiplicity and change
  • Each level of reality depends on the level above it for its existence and perfection
    • Lower levels "participate" in higher levels, deriving their reality from them (like a mirror reflecting an image)
    • Emanation process is necessary and eternal, maintaining the structure of reality (continuous flow of existence)

One, Intellect, and Soul relationships

  • The One acts as the ultimate source of Intellect and Soul
    • Intellect and Soul are the first and second "hypostases" (levels of reality) that emanate from the One
    • They are less perfect and less unified than the One, but more perfect and unified than the physical world (like a spectrum of existence)
  • Intellect (Nous) represents the realm of pure thought and the highest level of being
    • Serves as the first emanation from the One and the closest to it in perfection and unity
    • Contains the eternal, unchanging Forms (or Ideas) that are the archetypes for all things in the lower levels of reality (like a blueprint for existence)
    • Thinks itself and the Forms, and in doing so, generates the next level of reality, Soul (self-contemplation leads to creation)
  • Soul acts as the intermediary between Intellect and the physical world
    • Represents the second emanation from the One and the third hypostasis in the hierarchical structure of reality
    • Functions as the principle of life, motion, and desire in the universe (animating force)
    • Divided into two aspects: World Soul (animates the universe as a whole) and individual souls (animate particular living beings)
  • Relationship between the One, Intellect, and Soul is one of emanation and
    • Intellect emanates from the One and participates in its unity and perfection (derives existence and qualities from the One)
    • Soul emanates from Intellect and participates in its eternal Forms and ideas (receives structure and purpose from Intellect)
    • The physical world is an image or reflection of Soul, participating in its life and motion (manifests the qualities of Soul in material form)

Implications of emanation concept

  • The physical world represents the lowest level of reality in the Neoplatonic hierarchy
    • Furthest removed from the One and the least perfect and unified (most fragmented and changeable)
    • Characterized by multiplicity, change, and imperfection (in contrast to the unity and perfection of the One)
  • Physical world acts as an image or reflection of the higher levels of reality
    • Participates in the eternal Forms and ideas contained in Intellect (manifests the archetypes in material form)
    • Animated by Soul, which gives it life, motion, and purpose (imbued with the qualities of Soul)
  • Human beings are composed of both soul and body
    • The soul is an immortal, immaterial substance that belongs to the realm of Soul (eternal and unchanging)
    • The body is a mortal, material substance that belongs to the physical world (temporary and subject to change)
  • Human soul has fallen from its original state of unity with the higher levels of reality
    • Trapped in the physical world and identified with the body (lost its connection to the One)
    • Goal of human existence is to purify the soul and return it to its original state of unity with the One (through philosophical contemplation and moral purification)
  • Concept of emanation implies that the physical world and human existence are ultimately derived from and dependent on the One
    • Imperfections and limitations of the physical world are a necessary consequence of its distance from the One (like a faded copy of an original)
    • Human beings have the potential to transcend the limitations of the physical world and return to the One through philosophical contemplation and moral purification (by realigning with the higher levels of reality)
