Limbic System

Definition

The limbic system is a complex set of structures found on both sides of the thalamus, right under the cerebrum. It supports various functions including emotion, behavior, motivation, long-term memory, and olfaction (sense of smell).

Hippocampus: A small curved formation in the brain that plays an important role in forming new memories and connecting emotions and senses such as smell and sound to memories.

Thalamus: A large mass of gray matter deeply situated in the forebrain which relays sensory signals to other parts of brain for processing.

Hypothalamus: Part of brain responsible for actions related to survival such as eating, mating & fear responses.
