Chiang Kai-shek: The leader of the KMT who fought against both Japanese invaders during World War II and the CCP during the Chinese Civil War. After losing the civil war, he retreated to Taiwan, where he continued to lead as President until his death.
Long March: A strategic retreat undertaken by the Red Army (later became the CCP) in 1934-1935. They traveled thousands of miles to escape Nationalist attacks and regrouped in northern China, gaining support along the way.
Second Sino-Japanese War: A conflict between China and Japan from 1937 to 1945. Despite being adversaries during this war, both the CCP and KMT temporarily set aside their differences to fight against Japanese aggression.
