Definition

Duty refers to a moral or legal obligation that one is expected to fulfill. In the context of the period of "Republican Motherhood" following the American Revolution, duty refers to the societal expectation for women to fulfill their roles as mothers and educate their children in order to shape virtuous citizens for the new republic.
