Definition

The 14th Amendment is a pivotal part of the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1868, that grants citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States, including former slaves, and provides all citizens with “equal protection under the laws.” It significantly expanded the protection of civil rights and has been used as a basis for many Supreme Court decisions regarding equality and justice.
