AP US Government
Unit 1 – Foundations of American Democracy
Topic 1.9
What is the primary difference between a unitary system and a federal system in terms of governmental power?
Only one political party can rule in the federal system, unlike the unitary system where multiple parties can co-exist.
A federal system only has one level of government, whereas a unitary system has multiple levels.
In a unitary system, all power is centralized, while in a federal system, power is divided between national and subnational governments.
Unitary systems do not have any written constitution unlike the Federal Systems.
