AP US History
Unit 2 – Colonial Society, 1607–1754
Topic 2.3
How did the concept of indentured servitude vary between Northern and Southern British colonies?
Indentured servitude was more prevalent in Northern colonies due to extensive plantation farming.
While Northern colonies saw fewer indentured servants due to smaller farming units and industrial activity; it was common practice in Southern plantations which required large workforce for cultivation.
Both regions banned indentured servitude due to ethical concerns and instead used paid labor for all activities.
Identical policies towards indentured servitude were implemented across all colonies.
