AP US History
Unit 2 – Colonial Society, 1607–1754
Topic 2.8
Why did the British begin importing African slaves into colonial territories?
African slaves were cheaper than native slaves, making them a more cost-effective option for labor.
Africans were already fluent in English and thus easier to manage.
There was no legal way for colonists to force natives into labor but there was for Africans according to English law at the time.
After exhausting native populations for labor, the British turned towards Africans who proved immune to diseases that devastated native populations.
