Unit 2 – Colonial Society, 1607–1754
Topic 2.1
What contrasts exist between President Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act and Congress' Dawes Act?
Jackson’s act forced Native Americans to move westward; Dawes Act attempted to assimilate them into mainstream American life by dividing tribal lands.
Both acts supported Native American sovereignty but differed over land ownership rights issue.
Jackson's act aimed at granting citizenship to Native Americans whereas Dawes Act tried isolating them within reservations.
Both acts were essentially same with only minor differences in implementation strategies.
