Major Depressive Disorder

Definition

Major Depressive Disorder is a mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating, and thoughts of suicide. These symptoms must persist for at least two weeks and significantly impair daily functioning.

Bipolar Disorder: Bipolar disorder involves alternating periods of depression and mania (elevated mood and energy) or hypomania (milder form of mania). It is different from major depressive disorder because it includes episodes of elevated mood as well.
